Analysis Of Writers Paulo Frei Essay -- essays research papers
Perspectives in the Arts à à à à à The stories behind a piece of art are infinite. The reasons the artist produced the piece is only one explanation behind the work. Even so, who is to know the specific thoughts the artist was thinking at the time? As each art critic may conclude his own analysis of an artwork, who is right and who is wrong? Just as students challenge the information that is supposedly ââ¬Å"depositedâ⬠in them by the teacher in the classroom setting, art challenges the belief- that information can only be used as it was intended, which is highly rare in our day and age. The concept of perspectivism falls into place in this scenario. Art is perceived differently by varying individuals. There can be millions of interpretations that exist for one piece of artwork, however none more or less correct than the next interpretation. Similar to teachers depositing information to the students, each student may receive the information in different contexts. Whose to say whether or not the studentsââ¬â¢ interpretation is wrong? As writer John Berger points out the concept of reproducing art, in his essay ââ¬Å"Ways of Seeing,â⬠he addresses the idea how perspectives change completely when an artwork is reproduced to be used in a different context. As this is done, new thoughts and interpretations are created, thus can be seen as a progression of ideas. Writer Paulo Freire used the idea that ââ¬Å"knowledge emerges only through invention and re-invention(Freire 348)â⬠in his essay, ââ¬Å"The ââ¬ËBankingââ¬â¢ Concept of Education.â⬠This idea is the essence of what Berger is trying to point out through the reproducing of art. That the reproduction of art is basically the ââ¬Å"re-inventionâ⬠of the ideas and interpretations that already exist. And thus only through the re-invention of art, new ideas and new interpretations can be formed, a progression of ideas, achieving true knowledge. à à à à à ââ¬Å"[Art] becomes information of a sort, and, like all information, it is either put to use or ignored(Berger 120)â⬠. Each individual sees art differently, images become information that is incorporated with the individualââ¬â¢s own knowledge and personality. As art is reproduced over and over again in different contexts, the artistââ¬â¢s original purpose of the image is altered, a progression from old ideas to new ideas. Clearly one can see how the original intended purp... ... of an image, even more ideas and thoughts are evoked. These reproductions now represented in new contexts bear new ideas that are to looked upon in a different manner for these images, ââ¬Å"like all information, have to hold their own against all the other information being continually transmitted(Berger 123)â⬠. à à à à à The idea that surrounds an image having one clear message has been proved to be obsolete. Information cannot be used in one single manner. Matter of fact, there are just too many variables regarding perspectivism, individuality, and personal knowledge that prohibits a single idea that is to be received universally. Bergerââ¬â¢s reproduction of art only further implicates the ideas that already exists, and takes it to the next level of thinking, incorporating new ideas that originally may have had no relevance whatsoever, the progression of ideas, so to speak. As art challenges the belief- that information can only be used as it was intended, the conclusion is that information can be used in innumerable ways. Information was meant to be challenged, evoking new challenges and new thoughts and ideas in a never ending cycle of progression from old to new.
The Effect of Divorce on Childrens Learning and Behavior Essay
The Effect of Divorce on Children's Learning and Behavior The effect of divorce on children?s learning and behavior is a major problem in today's society. Everyday, children everywhere deal with this issue. Nowhere is this displayed more prevalently than in our schools. Divorce hurts children more than parents realize. By the time they turn 18, approximately fifty to sixty percent of all children in the United States have been affected by divorce (Miller, 1). Divorce-related problems (e.g., visitation, child support, parental custody) can be ongoing sources of stress to children, even up to eight years after the initial separation. Children can be robbed of a special experience and protection called 'Family'. They move on in their lives as individuals without the understanding of what familial security and bond is. Children look out into the world and wonder why it has dealt them a cruel card in life. 'Why me' Why can?t it be Tim, the big bully. Surely he deserves it more than I do?!? (Ng, 1) There is a world of a difference between what one experiences in a healthy family versus one that is broken. The children of a broken family often feel rejected and or responsible for his or her parent?s breakdown in their marriage. When in reality, they are not, the parents are! Even if the child was a source of stress, it is the parents responsibility to find a way to deal with it. Besides rejection and guilt, children often feel abandoned by the two closest people in their world. It generally leaves scars that are difficult to heal. The child is left trying to understand why these two people cannot stay together and may even personalize the blame because they feel that they are not good enough to bring them back togeth... ...and self-regulation. Possibly the most important thing we can do is act as resources for the children. We have to try to ensure the success of the child and thus shape the future of mankind. References Leo, John (2000). Authority in King Lear
Kayla Jacklin Dr. Treschow English 153 25 March 2013 Power Corrupts a Happily Ever After The theme of authority is prominent in William Shakespeareââ¬â¢s play King Lear. The play has many situations that allow readers to observe the negative effects that ones authority can have, and the negative effects that the lust for power will bring. Having authority is an important responsibility that is often misused. Even in todayââ¬â¢s society there are world leaders either taking the wrong irrational action or taking no action at all, which results in consequences for themselves and their people. In Shakespeareââ¬â¢s play we are presented with the idea that having a great deal of authority can make one seem ââ¬Å"blindâ⬠by making poor thoughtless decisions. These characters, and the readers of the play, will learn something from those mistakes through observing the outcomes the characters are faced with. Also in our society, there is corruption from a strong desire for power. Throughout history many dictators and tyrants have caused disruption for the people from their personal greed. In Shakespeareââ¬â¢s play, the characters who have a strong want for power will causes corruption which can teach the readers the downfalls of authoritative behavior. When a person of high power ends up in a situation they are not pleased with, they often act irrationally. Most times they act too quickly without proper analysis of the situation, leading to poor decisions. An example of this occurs in the play when King Lear decides to split up his kingdom equally among his three daughters. He asks his daughters to express their love for him, which he will use to decide who gets which land. The most love and admiration will get the best land. When Lear finds out Cordelia, the daughter he loves most, has the least love to express he acts unreasonably. Lear is furious, and he banishes Cordelia from the kingdom, refusing to give her the power he initially intended too. He deg rades her in front of her possible suitors, making her undesirable to the Duke of Burgundy. This scene portrays how Lear is blind to his daughterââ¬â¢s intentions from his self centered personality. Authority often makes one self centered because they are constantly worshipped by other people and they do not hear things they disapprove of often.Cordelia does not love her father the least, she is attempting to use honesty to show how her two sisters were exaggerating and lying about their love for Lear. Lear sees this as pure betrayal because he is used to being bowed down to at any expense. Cordelia doesnââ¬â¢t express the great love he is expecting, so he is stunned. This causes him to act irrationally without thinking anything through or trying to understand the situation. Here I disclaim all my paternal care, Propinquity, and property of blood, And as a stranger to my heart and meHold thee from this for ever. The barbarous Scythian, Or he that makes his generation messes To gorge his appetite, shall to my bosom Be as well neighbored, pitied, and relieved As thou my sometime daughter. ââ¬â (Shakespeare 1. 1. 110-117) Lear tells Cordelia how he has disowned her from the royal family and then tells her that he cares for her as much as he cares for savages that eat their own children. This extreme reaction from Lear illustrates how power has corrupted his thinking. Lear provides another example of acting irrationally, but with Kent this time.Kent argues with Lear about his decision to banish Cordelia. Kent believes Lear is making the wrong decision, and being the nobleman he is, he must attempt to change it. Since Kent is a noble man he will stand up for what is right, even if that means doubting his majestyââ¬â¢s decisions. ââ¬Å"See better, Lear, and let me still remain/ The true blank of thine eyeâ⬠(Shakespeare 1. 1. 156-157). Kent tells Lear to see better because Lear is misunderstanding Cordeliaââ¬â¢s intentions. But because Lear is being so arrogant, he refuses to understand Kent and banishes him also.Learââ¬â¢s arrogance will lead to an unhappy ending for all, just like Dan Brayton states in his journal article: ââ¬Å"What Lear cannot see, and what is perhaps glimpsed by Cordelia and Kent in their reactions to Lear's living will, is that the process of division initiated with the display of the map will become uncontrol-lable, as the play proceeds to leave nearly all of its major characters propertyless, bereft, or deadâ⬠(402). Lear is blind to the good intentions of Kent and Cordelia, which brings punishments upon himself. These irrational decisions lead to negative consequences for Lear. After Cordelia is banished, all the power is split between his other two daughters Goneril and Regan. In their deep lust for power, Goneril and Regan turn on Lear. Now that the two daughters have all the power they feel no need to respect their father and his wishes. They find no benefit in keeping him around and t hey find him a nuisance. The two daughters wonââ¬â¢t let their father keep all his noble knights; they refuse to house the only thing he has left in his waning life. Here do you keep a hundred knights and squires, Men so disordered, so debauched and bold That this our court, infected with their manners, Shows like a riotous inn. Epicurism and lust Make it more like a tavern or a brothel Than a graced palace. The shame itself doth speak For instant remedy. Be then desired By her that else will take the thing she begs, A little to disquantity your train, ââ¬â (Shakespeare 1. 4. 223-231) Goneril tells Lear that there are too many ill-mannered knights crowding the palace, and if he does not reduce their number she will do it herself.Lear has given Goneril and Regan all his power so he has no choice but to obey his daughters. He went from a King to a lonely old man because he was fooled by his two selfish daughters. The author of the journal article ââ¬Å"Sex and Authority in â⠬ËHamlet, King Learââ¬â¢ and ââ¬ËPericlesââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬ , Kay Stockholder, adds to this point: ââ¬Å"Having lost Cordelia to another king, Lear embarks on an inner journey through desolate isolation and victimizationâ⬠(26). Stockholderââ¬â¢s words can be interpreted such that Learââ¬â¢s daughters Goneril and Regan isolate him by ignoring him and his wishes.Since Lear has given up his power he is slowly being forgotten. He then becomes Gonerilââ¬â¢s and Reganââ¬â¢s victim in their thirst for power. Learââ¬â¢s poor decisions have fueled his already coming insanity. Goneril and Regan betray their father in their personal desire for power, they are so concerned with their own well being they have lost all intent to care for and love their father. The double plot of this play, Lear and his daughters along with Gloucester and his sons, brings in another significant example with Gloucester and his two sons Edgar and Edmund.Edmund is Gloucesterââ¬â¢s bastard son who seeks revenge and full inheritance from his father. Edmund knows that because he is the bastard son he will not be the son to take the place of his father; Edgar will. Edmund has been made to feel less than his brother his whole life and has a strong desire to be on top for once. In Edmund desire to get his fatherââ¬â¢s inheritance he will commit multiple acts of betrayal. He begins by telling his father of a fake letter which explains that Edgar is going to kill Gloucester. He then tells Edgar that Gloucester is angry with him and that he should avoid him till he can calm him down. Now that Edmund has created some tension, he expands on his plot. Edmund is with Edgar in Gloucesterââ¬â¢s castle when they hear Gloucester coming. Edmund tells Edgar to flee for his safety while he draws his own sword and wounds himself. When Gloucester enters Edmund tells him Edgar wounded him. This angers Gloucester and he sends out servants to find Edgar for punishment. In addition to Gl oucester and Edgars plot, Gloucester is involved with King Lear.Cornwall and Regan have taken over Gloucesterââ¬â¢s home and have forbidden him to help Lear. Gloucester knows he must help Lear, so he tells Edmund to distract Cornwall and Regan while he sneaks out to find Lear. Edmund immediately betrays his father by telling Cornwall and Regan what Gloucester has gone off to do. All this betrayal and cruelty come from Edmunds motivation to receive inheritance of his father; he wants the power from his father. These evil actions are a result of Edmunds greedy mentality, and with evil actions comes punishment like all of Shakespeareââ¬â¢s plays. At the end of the play, Edmund finally gets what he has coming for himself. Albany realizes Edmund committed treason and calls him to a duel. Just as the Herald calls up anyone who agrees so Albanyââ¬â¢s assumption of Edmund, Edgar walks in and takes over the fight. Edmund falls and eventually dies. While Edmund is dying he comes to th e realization that his actions were wrong. I pant for life. Some good I mean to do Despite of mine own nature. Quickly sendââ¬â Be brief in itââ¬âto th' castle, for my writ Is on the life of Lear and on Cordelia. Nay, send in time! ââ¬â (Shakespeare 5. . 242-246) Edmund appears to regret his wicked actions as he explains how he wishes he could live longer to do a little good. He also tells Albany and Edgar to go quickly to the castle in hope to save King Lear and Cordelia from the death he had sentenced on them. This gesture shows that he has recognized wrong from right and is making any attempt he can to do good before his lifeââ¬â¢s end. Along with Edmund learning from his actions, the audience too learns from his actions. Tragic endings like such are not pleasant, but they are eye openers for readers and observers. The readers can learn how the misuse of authority has negative effects without having to experience it themselves in real life. After observing the negat ive effects in the text, they can understand and recognize the same situations in real life to avoid them. Throughout King Lear attention is drawn to the idea that authority can have consequences if misused. The two plots in the play signify its importance by being very tragic and upsetting. King Learââ¬â¢s loss of Cordelia shows how egotistical actions and misused power lead to loss. He is blind to the signs Cordelia and Kent present him with which eventually lead to his demise.Goneril and Regan exemplify how a strong aspiration for power can lead to insensitive and wrong decisions. They betray their father, and anyone who stands in their way. Edmund also exemplifies how an immense want for power leads to his demise by betraying the two people dearest to him, his father and brother, just to inherit the power of his father. He commits acts of pure evil from inner greed. Although the play introduces so many sinful acts and wrong doings upon characters, in the end the readers learn valuable lessons. Authority corrupts when it is taken too far.Authority must not be taken for granted, and it should be used wisely. It should be used for the good of the people, not just for the good of one. Internet Is a Double-Edged Sword Essay
Internet already becomes a part of most humenââ¬â¢s life. Most people would like to sit in front of a computer many hours. Young people would like to share their information on facebook than their parents. Knowing how internet effect peopleââ¬â¢s relationships to other people is important, because there is nothing can replace relationships in humanââ¬â¢s life and very hard to fix it. First internet will increase loneliness. Acording to stoll, people who would like to spend time on internet will become more lonely. ââ¬Å"For every hour each week spent online, this group sharnk by about 4 percent.â⬠(Iso, 1) It is very easy to understand. We only have 24hr each day. When a person spends more time on internet, he would spend less time with his family or real life friends. Those people who live with that person in real life will start leaving him. However, those people who found out on the social network site will not stay online all the time. During the blank time, this person will feel lonely. There is nothing in his life. When a person spends more time on internet, enjoy his own small world more, he is also kept away from outside by internet. Most people know, when those people who are falling in internet. they will not respond to any one, refuse any thing not relate with them, not eating any food until really hungry. If any one tries to stop those people in the middle, they will be yalled or scolded. The effect is not very obsiver in the beginning. It will stack. Like a snow ball becomes bigger and bigger. Under this mode, people are selfcentered. People will be lonely by selfcenter, and be isolated by other people. Second, interenet is almost the fastest way to transfer messages and informations. It is good and bad. It is like a double-edged sword. Different way to use it, it will creat differet endings. Many scandals are released on internet first, than many people share or retwitter it. The imformation will not be able to control any more. The problems related with scandals will be solved by the pressure from publick opinion. Presidential election is a best very good example. Romney had almost as many supporters as Obama. After a vedio about a meeting between Romney and many rich supporters in a restauarnt, he lost a lot of supporters instantly. Romney and some of his suppotersââ¬â¢ relationships were totally over at that time. Romney tried to changed those supportersâ⬠⢠mind about that vedio, but it is way too hard to fix it. On another hand, there are not only bad enddings. Those singers or movie starts use social network site to share their messages to their fans. Internet reduces the distence between peopleââ¬â¢s relationship. Those famous people would not be easy to meet in real life. Internet is the best way. Few weeks ago, there was a news related with a family and Facebook. A lady send a none sence messages on Facebook. Her hasband immidently realized his wife may suffered a heart attack. He called 911 and drive back to home. Because he descovered it early, his wife get rescued. Internet helped him protected this relationship. Thrid, internet is place can creat relationship. In 20th century, many people start trying to find their wife or husband on social network site or online games. The relationship is very to creat and start compear with real life. People do not have to scare to be refused by a girl or a guy online. No one is watching beside. People will not feel too lose about refuse. Many girls or guys will accept it most time. They would like to give a try, because the person can be the right one. The relationship looks beautiful but it is made by glass. We never know how much lies covered by internet. It can be a fake relationship. Internet is only a tool. It will effect user and their relationship to other people. It is a knock-on effect. People is one who kick it. It still people effect relationship. The only difference is the way use internet.

Iphone 4 Research Paper
Weighing in at just four point eight ounces, the iPhone four is one of the most well-known and incredible touch screen cell phone devices ever made. With so many amazing features, information and capabilities, this phone is undoubtedly a must have of two thousand and twelve. All around the world, you see business professionals making important calls, closing in on company deals and occasionally talking to their spouses about what they will have for dinner. However, these sophisticated workers are not the only people you will see with an iPhone in their hand.Apple Corporation has keenly targeted buyers of all ages with the iPhoneââ¬â¢s broad array of capabilities. Starting with elementary aged children, who are lured in by the gaming qualities, along with their parents who want to be able to contact them after school or at soccer practices. For them, it is a fun yet functional addition to everyday life. More common users of the iPhone are Twitter, Facebook and Instagram-obsessed te enagers. Whether it is a sit down dinner or during high school and college classes, teens are always checking for new tweets, messages, status updates and professional looking Instagram photos.Shocking or not, the average teen checks their smartphone around three hundred times per day; twelve and a half times an hour, which equals out at every four point eight minutes. The average adult was not far behind this statistic, as they check primarily their email every twelve minutes. These are just a few different types of iPhone owners, but since there are so many technology savvy people in the world, almost anyone has the ability to use the iPhone. The iPhone has an astonishing sixty four million users throughout the United States, although Droid, Android, and HTC brand phones have claimed fifty one percent of smartphone users and iPhone users hold on closely to that remaining forty nine percent. Another great feature with the iPhone is Siri; interactive software that allows you use your voice to send messages, place calls and even locate the nearest coffee shop. All you do is hold the home button, and Siri will ask you how she can help. As most people know, the iPhone is made with glass on both the back and the front sides, which amounts to a beautiful retina display. This however causes many cracked and shattered expensive-to-fix screens. The five-megapixel camera also draws people to the iPhone since it is one of the best on the market. You will be sure to capture that Kodak moment every time. With a height of four point five inches, a width of two point three inches and a depth of zero point three seven inches, the iPhone most definitely is not the thinnest smartphone on the market. That is the Droid Razr, which is a large competitor to the iPhone, but it does not affect Apple because they have such extreme profits every year.Since the iPhone has eighteen international language options available, it is accessible nearly all over the world. With these great acces sories and uses, the iPhone seems like an ideal choice. Even though the iPhone appears perfect in every way, everything has flaws and there is no way around that. To start off, the iPhone as afore mentioned, is made of glass which causes it to be very fragile. This specific reason is a large contributor to why millions of dollars each year are spent on accessories such as cases and screen protectors, since some people do not purchase a case solely for decoration. One single slip of the fingers and your iPhone can be destroyed. Compared to other smartphones, the iPhone battery life does not stand up to its competitors. The Droid Incredible has a battery life of twenty hours while the iPhoneââ¬â¢s lithium battery holds an average of seven hours of use. Few things in my opinion could be worse than a dead phone when you need it most. Another weakness the iPhone has is its lack of availability for a memory card to be inserted. This drives away the smartphone users who have thousands of songs in their iTunes libraries, hundreds of pictures and videos along with the large gigabyte use for gaming apps.Another downfall would be the price. The phone itself is six hundred dollars if it needs to be replaced. It is no doubt worth that much, but since apple makes so much money the price should be lowered. A Droid Razr has almost all of the same features as the iPhone yet it only cost three hundred and fifty dollars. If I could personally change one thing about the iPhone, it would be the maps application. It should have turn-by-turn navigation similar to a real GPS.The iPhone is extremely difficult to use for directions if you are driving, not to mention dangerous while one attempts to read the confusing map. The map does not point you in the direction you are going; it points you in the direction that you are coming from. Overall, I believe the strengths outweigh the weaknesses and sixty four million other people must agree with me. The iPhone is used all over the world by many different people and for many different things including maps, the outstanding camera, its retina display, fast internet speed and everything else it contains.Overall, it would be a great investment for someone who needs a phone that does more than call. Although the iPhone has a few imperfections, its vast array of features makes it hard to pass up. http://www. apple. com/iphone/iphone-4/specs. html http://www. pcmag. com/article2/0,2817,2397688,00. asp http://articles. businessinsider. com/2010-01-13/tech/30018103_1_screen-repair-kit-iphone http://www. apple. com/iphone/built-in-apps/maps-compass. html http://articles. latimes. com/2012/jun/12/business/la-fi-apple-20120612

Identity Thesis Essay
Over the course of history, different theories have been formulated to help explain the complex relationship between the mind and the body. One of the theories elucidating the mind-body relation is dualismââ¬âthe view that mental states are independent from physical states. Mental states are ones of thinking, feeling, and believing whereas physical states are those outlined by physical and biological sciences. In contrast to dualism, physicalism insists that mental states are somehow physical states. The most straightforward version of physicalism is the identity thesisââ¬âthe theory that every type of mental state is identical to some type of physical state (Reasons and Responsibility, 285-286). Dualists and physicalists have disputed over the validity of the identity thesis; dualists denying its claim and physicalists defending it. The biggest problem facing physicalists and the identity thesis is the concept of qualia, the phenomenal quality of a mental state (Reasons and Responsibility, 281). Philosopher Frank Jackson offers what he calls the ââ¬Å"Knowledge Argumentâ⬠for qualia. Jacksonââ¬â¢s knowledge argument presents that nonphysical facts can be devised from facts about phenomenal quality. Through the concept of qualia, Jacksonââ¬â¢s knowledge argument shows that the identity thesis is false. The identity thesis holds that mental events are simply identical with brain processesââ¬âidentical in the same manner that sounds are identical with density waves in the air. The thesis bases on the idea that mental states of thought, sensation, and awareness are alike those of physical states (such as those of the brain and central nervous system). An example of identity thesis is that lightning and an electric charge are two of the same thing. In other words, lightning is an electric charge. An advocate of the identity thesis is materialist Peter Carruthers. Carruthers argues that everything (including mental states) exists through physical causes. Carruthersââ¬â¢ argument for the identity thesis can be summarized from the beliefs that some conscious states and events are casually necessary for the occurrence of some physical ones, and that there will be no need to advert to anything other than physical-physical causality in a completed neuro-physiological science. Thus, some conscious states and events are identical with physical brain states and events (Reason and Responsibility, 301-302). However, the concept of qualia refutes the idea of physicalism, and is the foundation of Jacksonââ¬â¢s knowledge argument against identity thesis. As a believer of dualism, Jackson uses the concept of qualia to support that the mind and matter are distinct and independent substances capable of existing without the other. Qualia are the subjective, felt qualities of experiences. For example, one may know all the physical properties of the color red and the physics behind why some things are red; however it is qualia that allows one to experience what it is like to actually see red. Jackson constructs his knowledge argument around the ideas of dualism and qualia. To further illustrate Jacksonââ¬â¢s argument for qualia (and dualism), the case of Fred and his unique color vision will be presented (Reasons and Responsibility, 298-299). For some reason, Fred has the ability to see two colors where others only see one. His retina is capable of distinguishing between two wavelengths of red in which others familiarizes with only one. He tries to explain the difference between the two reds. However he fails in doing so because others do not comprehend the difference. Therefore it is concluded that Fred can visually see one more color than everyone else. Despite having all the physical information about Fred and his special trait, one cannot know what it actually feels like to see two different types of red. Thus, Jackson believes that the physicalist left something out in the theory of physicalismââ¬âthe qualia or what it feels like to actually experience something. Consequently, quale explains how dualism is valid and physicalism is incomplete. The existence of knowledge through qualia (mental state) and that of physical facts (physical state) demonstrates the idea of dualismââ¬âthe view that two fundamental concepts exist. Jacksonââ¬â¢s knowledge argument derives mainly from his thought experiment of Mary; the brilliant scientist who has spent her life confined within a black-and-white room and has never seen colors. Mary learns all the physical facts relevant to the mind. She becomes an expert on the neurophysiology of vision and knows all there is to know about color. When Mary is released from her room, she experiences color for the first time. One would think intuitively that her color experiences provide her with knowledge she previously lacked, and that what she learns includes certain facts about what color experiences are like. The facts she learns upon her release cannot be physical facts because she already knew all physical facts before leaving the room. Therefore, the new knowledge comes from the concept of qualia, which indicates that not all facts are physical facts (Reason and Responsibility, 298-299). Thus physicalism is false. Jackson reaches his conclusion that the identity thesis is false by proving that mental states are not physical states. According to the identity thesis, states and processes of the mind are identical to states and processes of the brain. The concept of qualia refutes the validity of the identity thesis by presenting subjective forms of experiences. The knowledge acquired from subjective forms of experiences differs from those of physical knowledge about experiences. Since physicalism requires that all aspects of knowledge are the same, physicalism cannot be sound. Thus the identity thesis must be false. The cases of Fred and Mary show that physicalism doesnââ¬â¢t amount to all knowledge. The summation of Jacksonââ¬â¢s knowledge argument can be illustrated by the following: before Mary leaves the room, she knows all the physical facts about color experiences. When Mary leaves the room, she learns new facts about color experiencesââ¬âfacts about what itââ¬â¢s like to see in color. Therefore, there are nonphysical facts about color experiences. Furthermore, the identity thesis is false because Jacksonââ¬â¢s knowledge argument reveals that there is something about the experience of color (in Maryââ¬â¢s case) that cannot be captured by the physicalist view. So, physicalism is incomplete. Physicalism lacks the phenomenal quality of the mental stateââ¬âthe ability to experience something regardless of physical knowledge. Qualia and the mental experience can never be achieved from the premises of physicalism and the identity thesis. Thus, the phenomenal quality of experiences cannot be accounted for through physical properties of the brain. In conclusion, the identity thesis is false because nonphysical properties, like phenomenal properties, exist.

Building a power base Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words
Building a power base - Essay Example This will happen if and only if I strictly follow the power-building plan that I have. Being a professional and team player tops the list of actions in the power-building plan. To become a supervisor, one needs to prove to the organization that they know their work and that they can work well with the other members of the staff.
